Biography of a Nerd

patrick barabe

My first computer was a Commodore VIC-20 with which I quickly learned to make my name scroll across the monitor in a variety of patterns. My second computer was a Commodore 64 which proved a much more versatile companion that I would spend several years with, building interactive word games and tiny ASCII pickup trucks that would drive across the monitor screen.

At the same time, an interest in archaeology and travel inspired me to spend many hours studying maps of the world and wondering about the places they represented.

Years later, I discovered that my interest in maps, combined with an affinity for technology, could be leveraged to build a career involving Geographic Information Systems and spatial analysis. I completed a BA in geography (with a minor in anthropology), and since then I have devoted myself to developing a broad expertise in those facets of computing related to spatial data technologies. These range from data analysis and cartographic modelling to database design and application development.

Having worked for many years in both the private and academic sectors, I recently began to accept requests from small businesses that needed affordable, taylored assistance in fulfilling their technological requirements. These have ranged from building Task Scheduling systems to designing online storefronts and creating custom Content Management Systems. I continue to build on my experience with web-based technologies, and am always striving to apply new knowledge and techniques in my work.
